Ford has just unveiled the 800-horsepower Ford Mustang GTD which will be available in late 2024 or early 2025 at a starting price around $300,000.

Ford claims that this Mustang has a lot more features than just a powerful engine to justify its Lamborghini-level pricing.
It is based on the Mustang GT3 racing car, which is slated to compete internationally in 2019.
Jim Baumbick, Ford’s vice president for product development, said, “We see it as kind of an underdog approach to take on Europe’s racing elite, not just with the race car.
“Ford vs. Ferrari” focused on the Ford GT40 race car’s victories at Le Mans in the 1960s as retaliation for Ford’s inability to acquire the Italian automaker. Ford kept the Mustang’s classic shape this time around, placing the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine under the front hood rather than behind the seats like it did in the GT models. Ford, though, is aiming for comparable rates of speed and handling. That required getting rid of features that make a regular Mustang a useful automobile for daily use, like a trunk, for instance.
Despite being able to go on public roads, the Mustang GTD won’t be going to the grocery store.

The Mustang GTD’s body is made almost entirely of carbon fiber and has numerous active aerodynamic elements to assist it maintain traction when traveling at high speeds. Off the sides of the back window is a gigantic wing. In contrast to other Mustangs, this one lacks a trunk and back seats. According to Baumbick, this was done to maximize performance by utilizing every gram of weight and every square inch of available space.
Simply to reduce weight, the back seats were eliminated. A special gear box cooler and equipment for the complex adjustable suspension system are kept in the location where the trunk would have gone.
To give the automobile the kind of optimal front-to-rear weight balance that is excellent for cornering, a lot of mechanical and engineering design work was done, according to Baumbick. For instance, the eight-speed transmission of the vehicle is located all the way back.
The same Flat Rock, Michigan factory where all other two-door Mustangs are made will begin manufacturing of each vehicle. But eventually, the unfinished automobiles will be transported to Multimatic’s production facility in Markham, Ontario, Canada. A specialized automotive business called Multimatic also works on the Mustang GT3 race car.
According to Baumbick, some lessons learnt by Ford during the creation of this car will be applied to more commercially successful cars.
He said: “We’ve demonstrated in the past that we use these kinds of vehicles to transfer technology, lessons learned, and insight into our bigger application for production as well.
