Lionel Messi Tuesday night saw the continuation of Lionel Messi’s incredible Leagues Cup run with Inter Miami.

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi dominated the Philadelphia Union 4-1 to get to the Leagues Cup final. Miami advances to its first final in club history with the victory, continuing an astonishing turnaround for the poorest team in Major League Soccer. Next year, Inter Miami will compete in their first-ever CONCACAF Champions Cup thanks to this.

After Josef Martnez scored first to get things started, Lionel Messi added his ninth goal in just six games with the team. Martnez passed to Lionel Messi, who intercepted it before being tackled, and Lionel Messi ran toward middle before shooting past three Union players. Not even 20 minutes had passed when Miami scored to increase its advantage to 2-0.

The goal was scored immediately following Martnez’s first-minute strike. To the complete shock of the crowd at Subaru Park in Pennsylvania, Sergii Kryvtsov sneaked a deep through ball up the right side of the field to Martnez, who then shot across to the left side post and in for the opening goal of the night.

In the 47th minute, Jordi Alba made a breakaway run up the left side of the field to give Miami a 3-0 lead. When Alba scored to make it 3-0, he sprinted through the Union back line and had no one around him.

As they reached the locker room, Union supporters began to boo them loudly.

Union coach Jim Curtain remarked at halftime, “We put ourselves up for failure by making a massive error in the third minute and we’re chasing the game from there.

Philadelphia scored their first goal in the 73rd minute. From the right side of the box, Alejandro Bedoya scored between the legs of Miami’s DeAndre Yedlin on a rebound from a corner kick.

Miami, though, came back strongly to secure the victory. In the 83rd minute, Inter Miami scored another goal, giving them a three-goal victory.

Messi has dominated completely since moving to South Florida. Despite finishing last in the MLS Eastern Conference, he swiftly made Miami the betting favorite to win the Leagues Cup going into Tuesday night.

Messi has scored nine goals during Miami’s current six-game winning streak, which has surpassed its MLS-record number of victories this season. Miami has scored 21 goals overall as a club, only one goal short of matching their 22 goals in MLS play.

Only Messi’s second road trip with the team preceded Tuesday’s contest. The Union have only dropped one game at Subaru Park in the previous two seasons, and up until Tuesday night, they had only conceded four goals while competing in the Leagues Cup. Following back-to-back victories in penalty shootouts, the Union defeated Querétaro 2-0 in their quarterfinal game on Friday.

Miami will now on to the championship round, where Nashville SC will be waiting for them on Saturday. Tuesday night’s semifinal between Nashville and Monterrey ended in a 2-0 victory for Nashville due to goals from Sam Surridge and Fafà Picault.
